Japanese company Nissan Motor has decided to stop the production of the internal combustion engines worldwide, with the exception of the United States. According to its statement, the concern is going to focus exclusively on the development of EVs.
Nissan has already stopped the development of new engines for Europe. The next countries should be Japan and China. To a limited extent, Nissan will continue to develop gasoline internal combustion engines for the U.S. This decision is due to the peculiarities of the local market, where the high popularity of pickup trucks, which Nissan is not going to equip with an electric engine. Also, Nissan will not stop developing engines for hybrid models. Moreover, the Japanese have promised not to close factories and keep their staff at work.
Nissan hasn’t announced the reason for this decision. Most likely, it became the new standard for harmful emissions, which will come into force in Europe in 2025. This innovation may make the development of internal combustion engines commercially unprofitable for the automaker.
