How old do you have to be to rent a car?

How old do you have to be to rent a car?

Can you say that getting older is hard and confusing? You may be 18, and it is sufficient to vote, decide the future course of your country, or start a business and even purchase a car! But rental services are not so optimistic. Until you are 25, renting a car is forbidden. Or not? Where did this "25-to-rent" rule come from? And is it even true? Eventually, how old do you have to be to rent a car? Let's find out in our article.

Where did the "25-To-Rent" rule come from?

You have probably heard about needing to be 25 to rent a car. This rule was formed in large rental services a little while ago, but it is only an internal rule of some companies, and it does not apply to every service, and of course, it doesn’t affect countries' laws. Why do the big companies have such a rule? First of all, it depends on the insurance cost. As usual, insurance prices are higher for young drivers with little driving experience, so rental companies have to pay more to offer a car to a young renter. To avoid rate confusion, services decided to restrict renting a car to younger drivers.

Secondly, younger drivers are more likely to drive fast and take unjustified risks. This leads to rapid wear of the car and more expensive repairs and maintenance. Older drivers are considered more responsible, so payment for them might be lower. Some companies still offer the cars to underage drivers, but ask for a higher rate. Rental services prefer to pay for a fleet policy because it lets them insure hundreds of cars for a good price. But for their part, rental services have to follow the rules of the insurance companies, which do not give a discounted rate for young drivers. By limiting the younger aged drivers, services lessen the risk of the whole store and get cheaper insurance rates. As this rule became more popular among the rental services, many of the younger drivers suppose that the restriction to rent a car for a person under 25 years is low. We are happy to announce that it is just a conception created to lower the insurance rates and that not every rental service uses this rule.

New politics for the younger drivers

Limiting the renting age led to missing out on a large part of potential customers. This especially applies to European countries, where graduates prefer to spend the time before college traveling. Rental services quickly realized this omission and changed the inner politic. Nowadays almost every company allows renting a car to a younger person without taking an underage fee. This effortless solution brought the younger customers back. The increased fee allows the company to counterbalance the costs of insurance and to offer a car for those who are ready to pay an extra toll.

21 is new 25

Many companies have gone towards their customers and decreased the lower rental age to 21 years without additional fees. But like the "25-to-rent" rule, the "21-to-rent" rule is just an inner prescription of some companies, and it does not spread to all services. For example, Hertz minimized the age to 20 and Budget to 18. So if you want to rent a car, you have to compare several services to find the most suitable permissions.

Minimal driving age depends on countries’ low, not on companies' rules

If you want to rent a car in a foreign country, first of all, you have to check the law, not the companies' rules. For example, some states of India allow you to drive a car only at the age of 20, so you will never find a rental company that will offer you a car if you are under this age. Nonetheless, most countries let you get a license and drive a car when you are 18 years old. Some countries minimize this age to 16. It means that you have a chance to find a service that may offer a car, even if you are not 25 or 21.

Other restrictions for young drivers

Despite some services lowering the rental age, younger drivers still may have some restrictions. Usually, they have no option to rent SUVs, luxury cars, and performance cars from most locations. Another rule limits the daily distance the car may pass. For example, the younger driver is allowed to travel only 100 kilometers per day, while the older one is allowed to travel 250 kilometers per day. Don't forget about the deposit amount. Younger drivers have to pay a bigger deposit as a guarantee of careful riding.

How to avoid paying the extra fee

For many young drivers, the extra fee is quietly high, especially if we remind them that most of the underaged drivers are just the students. We found some ways to circumvent paying additional costs. The rental company may suggest a discount for an additional fee after checking your membership in organizations like alumni associations or professional associations.

Hertz and Avis offer a lower fee for the AAA members. This service helps to improve driving behavior and be safer. Also, it provides help on the roads. Being a member of this service shows the rental companies your responsibility and pursuit to be careful.

If you got a job, check if your company has a corporate account with a lower rental cost. Often companies take care of the expenses, even for underaged workers. Don't be shy to ask the employer about an account that gives access to the rental companies. Likewise, the companies pay for the employees, the government pays for its defenders. If you were in an army or worked as a military person, the government may provide proof you are worthy to trust on the roads.

Is there a Maximum Rental Age?

As the minimum age, the maximum age depends on the inner companies' rules and the government law. Usually, countries have no restrictions for older drivers, but sometimes it can be limited by age of 75 or 80. Rental services may ask for a doctor's permission that allows you to drive a car.

Always remember, that it is better to contact the service in advance to notice your age than meet the problems in a renting place and get upset before the vacation. The same rule works for younger drivers too - notify the company about the age fact before coming in place.

What do you need to rent the car?

A state-issued driver's license is required to rent a car in all countries. Check if your license is suitable to use in foreign countries because some versions of the license are needed to have an international verified copy. Also, you are needed to have a passport. It is as important as the driver's license because it proves your identity. And last but not least is the credit card. Be sure that the limit of the loan is enough to cover the deposit costs. Don't worry - the deposit will be returned to your account after you complete your ride.

Remember, that the most important thing is not your age, but the ability to anticipate dangers on the roads. Sometimes age does not determine actual driving experience. You may be 30 years old, but this will not guarantee a safe journey. Always stay vigilant on the road, make stops and get enough sleep at night. If you are not confident in your abilities, it is better not to test your fate on the roads of a foreign country. Offer the driver's seat to a more experienced person who can make your journey safe.
