Christmas in Zurich: traditions, food, markets

There are four Christmas Markets, each with its own unique atmosphere: Niederdorf Christmas Market, Wienachtsdorf Market, Werdmuhleplatz Christmas Market, Christkindlimarkt. Let’s learn about each of them.

  • Niederdorf Christmas Market

Niederdorf Christmas Market is the oldest Christmas Market in the city. It's located in the Niederdorf area of the charming part of the old town. This market reminds of the classic Christmas movies - the smell of the mulled wine and cinnamon fills the festive alleyways with the fairy lights and decor, while you are wandering in the search of Christmas gifts. Niederdorf Christmas Market is open the whole of December, opening hours: Mon-Sat: 11 am – 9 pm; Sun: 11 am – 7 pm. Address: Weihnachtsmarkt im Niederdorf, Niederdorfstrasse, 8001 Zürich.

  • Wienachtsdorf Market

Wienachtsdorf Market is the biggest Christmas Market in Zurich. A hundred stalls form the "festive village" with a variety of tasty dishes, handmade gifts, and thousands of Christmas lights. Here you can also find an ice rink to make an unforgettable fairy-tale ride. Opening hours: Mon-Sat: 11 am – 10 pm; Sun: 11 am – 8 pm.   • Werdmuhleplatz Christmas Market

The feature of the Weihnachtsmart Christmas Market is a unique ‘Singing Christmas Tree’ and a surreal image of millions of shimmering stars. These lights were named ‘Lucy’ after the Beatles song ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. Each of the 12 000 lights is encircled by a crystal to make the mind-blowing diamond and star-like effect. Weihnachtsmart Christmas Market is opened Monday to Thursday 4 pm – 9 pm, Friday 4 pm – 10 pm, Saturday 1 pm – 10 pm, Sunday 1 pm – 9 pm. 

  • Christkindlimarkt

Christkindlimarkt is held in the main concourse of the Train Station, the feature is the 32-feet Christmas tree with thousands of sparkling Swarovski crystals. The unusual location puts the Christkindlimarkt on the list of the largest indoor Christmas markets in Europe. Here you'll be lost count of the varieties of mulled wines, desserts, and gifts. Swiss Christmas street food in Zurich

In December Zurich becomes impregnated with the scent of spices, dough, and cinnamon, on every step you see a stand with raclette, fondue, and hot chestnuts. And to keep your hands warm, there are lakes of mulled wine and sweet punch.

Raclette is a tasteful melting cheese that is heated up then scraped onto a plate with potatoes and pickles. It's one of the most delicious Swiss dishes you can find at the Christmas Market in Zurich.

Öpfelchüechli is deliciously crispy apple fritters served with custard. You have to taste it if you like sweets.

Flammkuchen is a flatbread with creme-fraiche, bacon, and onions on the top. On the street markets, you can find Flammkuchen with different toppings to choose the most delicious one.

Kaiserschmarrn is the shredded pancakes with powdered sugar, usually served with a side of apple sauce or ice cream.
